I came across an article recently that talked about the the number of people in Hawaii that back into their parking spaces. It’s a very large percentage of drivers that do this.

There are lots of suspicions as to why this is done. Some say it’s safer when pulling out, others say is has to do with delayed gratification. Regardless of the initial motivation, I’ve been experimenting with this. Just like most people, when I have a chance to pull through and park head out, I do it…it’s fun. I have also been backing into spots. I’ve come to call this “batman mode”.

Here is what I found:

  • With a little practice I have become very good at backing into a spot well centered and parallel to the lines on the first try. Better than when pulling in forward.
  • Exiting a space feels safer and faster. I can see out in all directions.
  • When I have large vehicles on both sides I don’t have to pull out as far to have COMPLETE visibility.
  • I don’t have to take two or three tries to back out and get going.
  • I think there is less opportunity to run into a person or vehicle when backing into a spot than when backing out

In general, I can back into a space in one try and I can get out in a single motion. I feel like the time people have to wait for me to back in is less than backing out.

This is a surprisingly controversial issue, you will find heated conversations on both sides. Do some searching on your own.

There are even laws relating to this practice. In some cases, I understand it. In others, no one seems to remember the original intent of the law.

Give it a try, let me know what you think.
